The Voyage Starts

We started our voyage across the Atlantic with a 24 hour drive to Salem, Ma. Kevin and I had a picnic lunch someplace on the trip. I really enjoyed the trip with my son.

We found a beautiful landing on the ocean where we could see Dion's Yacht Yard in the background. It's dawn and the sailing ships stand out against the New England fog.

Here's another photo of the yachts against the morning fog. There are many more photos that you'll see if you have the CD version of the trip.

Yep, here's another one. I didn't use all the same photos on the web page, but here's another one! I can't see how pretty they are on my laptop because the screen really doesn't show them, so I've guessed what they'll look like and I'll make a better webpage when I get home.

My son, the photographer! We had a great time driving to New England, even if we did have to drive through New York City.

More photos of the Yachts as the light gets better on July 11, 2001. If you take enough pictures at least one of them will look good. Even a blind pig gets an acorn every once in a while.

Kevin took this photo with the Olympus and it's beautiful. I'll take it to Ritz Photo and print it for him when I get back.

There wasn't enough contrast in this photo to make a good picture, but you can see the sun rising, the mooring posts, the boats shrouded in fog and the ducks waiting for sunrise.

A lone gull heads for breakfast. Read 'Johnathan Livingston Seagull'.

We had lunch at a little Italian place where the food was good and the waitress was tasty! At least Kevin thought so enough to go back later to ask her out. He may be a day late if she'll go out with him.

'Little Wing' is here! Look at all the tree limbs she's collected driving through the tree lined streets of Salem.

We'll be sailing the Atlantic on this little boat? Gee, from 30,000 ft. Nikki will only see a dot against the whitecaps. God's even higher up, I hope he can see us better than Nikki will be able too. But, remember, God helps those who help themselves.. So, I've got enough safety equipment that the trip will be fine even if he's busy helping people that need his help more than us.

We found lodging at the Stepping Stone Inn. Our room was at the very top. The two windows just under the roof were where we slept. Kevin was on the right. And there is a beautiful statue on the traffic island in front of the B&B.

Here's a better view of the Statue. There are holes in it, and the tour guide on a bus was explaining about them when he drove away. I guess I'll have to come back and take the tour to find out what caused 'em. Gee....

The wooden ketch in the middle is owned by Fred Dion. He's the owner of Dion's Yacht Yard. You'd have to own a Yacht Yard to afford a beautiful wooden yacht as beautiful as this one.

The main harbor at Marblehead is beautiful. The bay is filled with yachts and there is a water taxi to take you to your boat if it's tied up here. There's even a floating restaurant out in the bay. We met the manager last night but we had to go find a chart of the harbor so we'll be safe leaving port.
