Sunset and the islands aren't in sight. We should see Flores in the morning. Here's a map of the islands, so you'll know where I'm talking about. |
| It's just after sunrise and Flores is just ahead. Jiann saw lights on the island sometime after midnight. |

Tom reads to pass the time waiting for landfall.
| And then, when his 4 hour shift is over, sleeps to pass the time till we get fresh showers and hot food!!!! |

Our chart with the navigation plots Tom made each day. The dotted line is the planned route. The upper plot was the first plot we picked and the middle plot is the actual route we took. We followed our rhumb line, till the storm forced us North. We were sailing in a southward direction all the time to try to get toward the Azores high and lower wind velocities.

| The navigation table in 'Little Wing' you can see the GPS (with e-mail) and the shortwave receiver attached to the bulkhead. |

Our kitchen... It's not very big, but it took care of us. The stove swings as the boat moves so we can cook while underway. I don't think I could make it for weeks eating only granola bars and dry cereal.
| The life raft was stored under the tiller so it would be available quickly if we needed it. I'm glad it wasn't needed! |

Jiann likes the soup so much he's licking the pot. It must be his turn to do the dishes and he wants the pot cleaner than usual before he starts washing it.
| The island of Flores in the early morning sun. |
Landfall is just ahead! At 6kts, it will be about an hour before we can find a shower, an Internet Cafe, a restaurant and a hotel!!!!!
| Jean looks for the entrance to the harbor. It's almost visible in the distance. |
Flores!!! It's not very big, but it sure is beautiful. Tom's navigation was right on the money.
| Here's the harbor, but we didn't see a restaurant, showers, or very much of anything except a container dock and a fishing village. |
Large container ships like this one passed us in the night.
| Jiann gets the main ready to set sail. We decided to continue to Horta before we go ashore. |

A fellow sailor heading from Faial to Flores. Later we talked to a couple from Switzerland who just left Flores and they told us the showers and Internet were free on Flores!!! And there was a good restaurant too.
| Another view of the sailboat that passed us in the other direction. |
The wind was steady from the Southwest and we made good time to Faial.
| The next morning we found the islands of Faial and Pico in the distance. |
Sunrise and it's going to be a fantastic day! I'm going to take my first fresh water shower in 12 days.
| The moon is still shining as the sun comes up. |
It won't be long now. Just a couple of hours till we see if we walk funny.
| Faial looks like Ireland in the distance. Fields of green separated by hedges and rocks. |
The islands were formed by volcanic activity and lava cones are distinctive landmarks.
| Horta! We'll be ashore in just a little while. Where's that shower? |
