Horta, on Faial

The harbor office is located in the same building as the immigration office and the customs office. Three stops and we can go to the showers and find a hot meal that we didn't have to cook.

During the night between Flores and Faial we caught up and passed this Beneteau First 30e. Each time they got too far away, I'd turn a few degrees into the wind and they'd slowly catch us. Then I'd turn a few degrees downwind and we'd sail away again. <big evil grin>

The harbor at Horta was decorated for Sea Week and the boats were flying flags to celebrate the fun.

As it gets dark along the harbor the lights come on.

Every night was a celebration. Good music, good food, and great beer were available everywhere you turned. The people were the friendliest I've ever seen.

Each boat must make a painting on the harbor walls or it loses it's luck.

One day, I'll sail 'Sailabration' here and put our painting on the wall. I've picked out a few spots that need a fresh painting.

The streets are paved with cobblestones and small shops line the lane.

Daisy works at the Base Peter Zee office signing up people to go whale watching or to use the Internet. She is the most beautiful young lady in Horta! Since the flower I gave you won't last very long, here's one for your hair that will last a lot longer.

Daisy was kind enough to give me directions to the grocery store and just up the road from the store was the Observatory where I found a great place to take photos of Horta.

The marina is just over the hill and Horta spreads out to the left.

Pico is almost always covered with clouds. Here's a rare day in the Azores.

Horta from the mountain top. The marina is just out of sight to the right.

To the right of the marina, you can see the swimming beach. Till the 70's this area was used to process whales.

The marina was decorated for the festivities.

The boaters paintings covered every surface. The marina was beautiful.

French Painter and Photographer Annie Guir was holding an exhibition of her work in Horta. I was fortunate to meet her and I'll mail her a copy of my photo of her.

Where is that light meter when you need it. Pen Duick won't wait till I find it?

In just a few days, the racers will make landfall in Lisbon. I guess you don't get to see much of a long distance ocean race from the marina.

Jiann would have made a great addition to the Pen Duick crew. He's a magician at sail trim.
