The digital camera I've been using, an Olympus D-600L won't be
usable when we can't recharge the batteries or use the laptop
computer every day to save the photos. So, I've got a new camera
for the trip. It's a Nikon Pronea and it's very small. Most of
the photos on this page were taken with it. The main webpage
to see photos from our voyage will be: http://www.first285.com/atlantic.
The site will be updated as soon as I fly back to East Tennessee.
(about August 25th... Give or take a few weeks.) |

Chicago has several marina's downtown. The Columbia Yacht Club
has uses a converted Ice Breaker from Alaska as a home. I belong
to the Horizon Yacht Club in Ten Mile, Tennessee. This photo was taken with the Nikon,
and here's a digital photo using an Olympus
digital. |

The marina is just a block East from all the traffic, noise and
buildings of the city. The waterfront is home to sailors, joggers,
rollerbladers, and aviators (Meggs Field is right behind the
yacht club.) |
|
|
|
The city skyline after dark. The Navy Pier is to the right and
Meggs Field is just out of sight to the left of the photo. We
had 15kts of wind and smooth seas. Lash's First 285 is perfect
for this area. (Mine would be too if it didn't cost a fortune
to ship it to Chicago to go sailing.) Next time we visit, we'll
trailer our O'Day 222 up and go sailing. |

Another First 285 heading out to go sailing. If anyone knows
who's boat this is, send them an e-mail and tell them they have
a great looking boat! |

Looks like a great evening on Lash Bellavia's First 285 (Sea
Jane Run) . Life doesn't get much better than this. |

The view from Jean's window at work. The marina just to the right
of the building was where he kept 'Little Wing' his First 30
that's taking us to Europe in a few weeks. I don't know how he
ever got any work done with a view like this. |
 |
|
 |
 |
|
There's so much to do and so little time to finish. The original
plan was to spend another year, getting 'Little Wing' ready for
the passage. However, job duties won't wait for everything to
be finished. So, Jean has spent all his time getting everything
ready for the trip. I'm sure we'll finish everything that has
to be done before we see land in Europe. |

Here's the view of the mountains in East Tennessee. We were heading
toward home and Norris Lake is in the background. I used the
Nikon to take this photo and here's one
taken with the Olympus D-600L. It's easy to see why they
were named the 'Smoky Mountains' or the 'Blue Ridge Mountains.'
The haze consists of hydro carbons that are given off from the
trees. If the haze was man made, we'd call it pollution... The
wind swirls around the mountains and makes sailing a real challenge.
The wind shifts every 100 yards or so. |

'Little Wing' on the Travel Lift in Chicago being placed on the
truck for the trip to Salem, MA. |
|
|
'Little Wing' has a fin keel and Jiann buffed the surface of
the keel and hull so we'd have all the speed we could for the
journey. He did a very good job getting the bottom ready for
the trip. |
 |
|
 |
Jiann helps line up 'Little Wing' with the shipping cradle. This
is the original cradle that Beneteau used to ship 'Little Wing'
to the US on the deck of a cargo ship when she was new. Now a
few thousand miles at highway speeds and she'll be back in the
water in Salem, MA. |
